FURNITURE RECALLED AFTER 4-YEAR-OLD'S DEATH

A piece of furniture was recalled by a U.S. agency this week after the death of a 4-year-old.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Dania Furniture of Boise, Idaho, on Thursday announced a recall for the company's Hayden bookcase.

"The recalled bookcase is unstable if it is not anchored to the wall, posing tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or serious injuries to children," the CPSC said in a press release. "In August 2023, Dania Furniture received one report of a tip-over incident with an unanchored bookcase that resulted in the death of a 4-year-old child."

Over the past several months, the CPSC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have issued recall announcement for a number of products and food items for a variety of reasons.

The recall announcement from the CPSC urges customers to "immediately stop using the recalled bookcase if it is not anchored to the wall, and place it in an area that children cannot access.

"If mounting/anchoring services cannot be completed for any reason, or if consumers would prefer a refund, Dania Furniture will provide a full refund of the purchase price of the recalled bookcase to consumers and arrange for the pickup and/or disposal of the recalled bookcase. Dania Furniture is also contacting all purchasers directly."

Roughly 940 of the recalled bookcases were sold exclusively by Dania Furniture, with stores located across the nation and on its website. The recalled products were sold from November 2017 to February 2024, with a price of about $370, the recall announcement said.

"The recalled Hayden bookcase contains six storage cubbies, and is made of brown wood with three sliding white doors. It measures 35.5 inches in width, 16 inches in depth, and 73 inches in height. A label located on the back of each unit contains the product name and SKU number LB2225/A," the recall announcement said.

In a statement, Dania Furniture told customers to contact the company to receive a "tip-over restraint kit" with instructions.

"We are also happy to arrange for free in-home installation of the tip-over restraint kit," the company said, adding that customers may also schedule a return of the product "for a full refund."

Dania Furniture directed Newsweek to the statement from the CPSC after reaching out for comment via email.

Earlier this month, the CPSC announced a similar recall for rechargeable lights after a consumer died when the product overheated.
