FRANCESCA’S CLOSING STORES NATIONWIDE: HOW EACH STATE IS IMPACTED

Women’s boutique Francesca’s is preparing to wind down operations and close all of its roughly 400 locations in the U.S, according to a recent report.

Last week, Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) reported that the fashion retailer would soon be shutting down. A source told the outlet that merchants were “let go” on January 14, 2026, with “no warning.” A company representative later told WWD in an emailed statement that Francesca’s would be “liquidating our inventory and closing soon.”

The company has not yet commented publicly on the closures, and Newsweek has contacted Francesca’s through its website for further information. Newsweek has also contacted two of the firms which acquired Francesca’s following its 2020 bankruptcy.

Why It Matters

The fashion and retail sectors have been going through a prolonged period of difficulty, battling declining foot traffic at brick-and-mortar locations while losing ever more ground to e-commerce. 2025 proved a particularly challenging year, as companies competed for the attention and funds of increasingly cash-strapped consumers, whose budgets were strained by rising prices and a weakening labor market.

The outset of 2026 has already been marked with some major collapses in the sector, most notably Sak’s Global’s recent announcement that it had filed for bankruptcy amid declining sales and mounting debts.

What To Know

Founded in 1999 and based in Houston, Texas, Francesca’s has grown into one of the largest women’s fashion retailers in the U.S, primarily specializing in clothing but also jewelry and accessories.

The company has in the past faced financial difficulty, filing for bankruptcy protection in 2020 amid declining sales, and emerging from the process after closing over 100 stores and being acquired by a group of investment firms, Reuters reported at the time.

While the company has not yet commented on its reported closure, a customer service agent told WWD that all stores would be shuttering. Francesca’s currently operates around 400 stores across 45 states, according to its website.
